Originally from Crete (Greece), Sophia Parakletakis runs a ballroom dance studio in a suburb of Chicago. She met her Spanish husband, Marco (now deceased) when they were on the professional dance circuit in Europe. They moved to the United States and opened a dance studio together, but he died seven years later from complications arising from lung cancer. They had one child, Penelope Maria Parakletakis de l'Estrella.
